Contributed by Guide's author, March 2009

Hainan Island is a very desirable place to live, although not necessarily work, for foreign English teachers depending entirely on what one is looking for.

My Experience at Hainan University

My Experience at Hainan University
Dave Wallace from the U.S.A.

People keep asking me about living in Hainan. I imagine this is because people would all love to do it, but can’t quite grasp the fact that it is actually possible. Hainan is absolutely beautiful. The weather is fantastic, the people are kind, and the beaches are open year-round. However, what people don’t realize is that Hainan is more than just a vacation destination. For the disciplined student of Chinese language, it is also a place where you can make the linguistic leap to becoming an advanced learner of Mandarin Chinese.

English crucial to Hainan island's tourism plans

By Bai Li Cheng (China Daily)

The Chinese know it, and so do the Russians, but Hainan is a mystery to most of my friends.

On a recent visit to my Australian homeland, I told everyone I was moving to Hainan to study Chinese. I e-mailed a mate in London, and spoke to an aunty in Florida, too, and everybody asked: "Hi, where?"

Expat Living in Hainan, China

Posted on May 9, 2007 by IL

Dear International Living Reader,

I’ve been an expat in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan (China’s southernmost province) for the last couple of years. Living here is…quirky. Water buffalo amble down the palm-lined streets (but hardly ever downtown)…wild looking men and women, covered in mud and with long matted hair stroll around town in their birthday suits…a local tofu dish, beloved by the Hainanese, is the foulest smelling thing I’ve ever encountered.
